Muslin Blanket Sizes: Throw to California King

muslin blanket sizes on bed

Blanket sizes are not mattress sizes, and that catches people out. A Queen blanket is not simply the size of a Queen mattress, because a blanket needs to hang over the sides.

Here is the full size range, what each one covers, and how to work out which you need before you order.

How to Work Out the Size You Need

The calculation is simpler than it looks. Take your mattress width, then add the drop you want on each side.

A drop of around 10 to 12 inches per side covers the mattress edge and looks tidy without pooling on the floor. So for a 60 inch wide Queen mattress, 60 plus 12 plus 12 gives 84 inches, and our Queen blanket at 90 inches wide gives a little extra.

Two things push you toward sizing up. A deep mattress, since a thick mattress eats drop before the blanket reaches the side. And sharing a bed with someone who pulls, since extra width is the only real solution to that.

What the Throw Size Is For

At 47 x 71 inches, the Throw is not a bed size. It is meant for a sofa, an armchair, the foot of a bed, or carrying around.

It is also the only size with edges that are fully hand embroidered by women in Turkey, which is why it works as a gift and why people tend to leave it out on display rather than folded in a cupboard.

If you want a blanket that covers a single sleeper on a bed, go to Twin rather than Throw.

Twin, Queen, King and California King

Twin at 63 x 90 inches suits a single bed, a child's room, a guest bed or a dorm mattress. It also works as a generous sofa blanket if Throw feels too small.

Queen at 90 x 94 inches is the most common choice for a shared bed and works on both Full and Queen mattresses.

King at 90 x 102 inches adds length rather than width over the Queen, which matters more than people expect, since most complaints about a blanket come from the foot of the bed rather than the sides.

California King at 90 x 118 inches is the longest option, made for the narrower and longer Cal King mattress. It also suits anyone tall who wants coverage at the foot regardless of mattress size.

If You Are Between Two Sizes

Size up. A blanket slightly too large drapes better and can be folded back. A blanket slightly too small sits short on one side all the time, and nothing fixes that.

This applies more to muslin than to stiffer fabrics, because muslin drapes rather than holding a shape, so extra width falls softly instead of looking bulky.

Does Muslin Shrink?

Cotton settles slightly after the first wash rather than shrinking noticeably. Our blankets are cut with that in mind, so the listed size is what you should expect in use.

What keeps it that way is temperature. High heat is what actually shrinks cotton, so a gentle cycle at 86°F (30°C) and low heat drying protects the measurements.

Matching Pillowcases

Pillowcases come in Queen at 20 x 27 inches and King at 20 x 35 inches, sold in pairs, in the same colors as the blankets.

They are useful if you want the bed to read as one piece. If you would rather keep some contrast, pairing a plain blanket with striped muslin bed sheets is a simpler way to add texture.

Care

Wash the blanket alone the first time. Use a gentle cycle at 86°F (30°C) and tumble dry on low heat. If air drying, support the wet blanket evenly in a well ventilated area and avoid stretching the weave.

Do not use bleach and do not dry clean. Avoid washing with jeans or anything that has small hooks, which can catch the weave or an embroidered edge. No ironing is needed.

The Bottom Line

Muslin blankets run from Throw at 47 x 71 inches to California King at 90 x 118 inches. Work out your size by adding 10 to 12 inches of drop to each side of your mattress width, size up if you are between two, and size up again if your mattress is deep or you share the bed.

All sizes are organic Turkish cotton in eleven colors, shipped from our small family business in Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size muslin blanket do I need for a Queen bed?

The Queen blanket at 90 x 94 inches suits both Full and Queen mattresses. If your mattress is deep or you share the bed, the King at 90 x 102 inches gives more length.

How big is a throw size muslin blanket?

The Throw is 47 x 71 inches, or 120 x 180 cm. It is intended for a sofa, armchair or the foot of a bed rather than as bed coverage, and it is the size with hand embroidered edges.

Should I size up or down on a blanket?

Size up. A slightly large blanket drapes well and can be folded back, while a slightly small one sits short on one side permanently. This matters more with muslin, which drapes rather than holding its shape.

Do muslin blankets shrink after washing?

Cotton settles slightly after the first wash rather than shrinking noticeably. High heat is what causes real shrinkage, so a gentle cycle at 86°F (30°C) and low heat drying protects the size.

Do pillowcases come in pairs?

Yes. Queen pillowcases at 20 x 27 inches and King at 20 x 35 inches are both sold in pairs, in the same colors as the blankets.
